| Google eBook Reader will be a tough competitor. |
Google eBook Reader or Iriver Story HD can be likened to a giant entered the eBook Reader market is already dominated by the Amazon Kindle and Nook. Google's big name makes Iriver Story HD eBook Reader calculated by the market in America.
eBook Reader Google's entry into a threat to the dominance of Amazon's eBook Reader and a blow to the other brands are relatively small. So far, Google is known to be the king of the internet, a kingdom which is also inhabited by the eBook.
However, this new device helps Google make an important step forward with its digital books initiative. Why? Simply because this device is the first one on the market that integrates the company’s eBooks in its platform.
The Iriver Story HD eBook Reader will cost $139, which is the same price as the Kindle or the Nook. Whether it can be a third major player in the eBook Reader wars (a spot Kobo has tried to fill, to varying levels of success) remains to be seen, but with Google in its corner, it's easy to bet on Iriver.
Google eBook Reader was designed to provide a competitor in the market that Barnes & Noble and Amazon have thus far cornered: A cloud-based, always-in-sync library of books and reading. There's a Web app, Android and iOS apps, and access to more than 3 million books.
One particularly cool feature with Google eBook Reader is its integration with independent bookstores: Google allows book sellers to sell Google ebooks on their Web sites, which adds a local bookstore feel and a useful recommendation and curation source to ebook buying.
Until now, those who wanted to read Google eBooks were forced to download them to a computer, then transfer them with a cord to their device.
However, by managing to integrate the Google eBooks platform all users will be able to buy, read and download everything directly to their devices.
Google eBook Reader weighs 207 grams and is less than a centimetre thick. It will have a high-resolution XGA 6" screen with 63 per cent more pixels than other competitors and it has a six-week battery life from just one charge.
Google Books can be purchased from the Google eBookstore on all sorts of desktops, laptops and tablets iPads, Galaxy Tabs, G-Slates and Flyers but as of yet no e-readers. Not on a Kobo. Or a Kindle. Or a Nook.
One thing we know for sure is that the Story HD eBook Reader lacks the snappy touch-screens of the new Barnes & Noble Nook and the Kobo eReader Touch Edition devices. No touch-capable Kindle has been released either.
